Bath is famous for its Architecture, Shopping and Historic Roman Remains. At the Southern Most tip of the Cotswolds it is often used as the starting point for walkers wishing to walk the hundred miles of the Cotswold Way.
Bath is a popular place to visit on day trips from London, and there are always a fleet of coaches ferrying tourist up and down the M4 motorway. However a day here does not do justice to this magnificent city. Visitors would do well to give themselves at least a couple of days to stay here and really savour the atmosphere.
Bath Abbey, right in the center of the City, is truly magnificent. Started around 1500 on the site of an older, Norman, church. In the courtyard in front of the Abbey are the Pump Room and Roman baths. both worth a visit. The Roman Baths are the main reason for the original significance of the site, when the Romans discovered the Hot Spring and set up camp here some 2000 years ago.
The Circus and the Royal Crescent are two of Baths most famous sites, the Circus is a magnificent circular street and the Royal Crescent is probably the best known of all Baths buildings. No 1 Royal Crescent is owned by the Bath preservation trust and has been restored to show how an elegant town house would look in the Eighteenth Century.
Poultney Bridge is another famous landmark which crosses the River Avon. A unique structure housing shops and restaurants either side of the narrow roadway.
